Disgraced ex-pol Anthony Weiner should get probation for sexting a 15-year-old because he’s sick but not a sexual predator, his lawyers argued late Wednesday.
Weiner, who on May 19 pleaded guilty to transmitting obscene material to a minor, is set to be sentenced on Sept. 25. Weiner’s wife, Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin, filed for divorce the day of his guilty plea.
Under Weiner’s plea deal, prosecutors said a sentence from 21 to 27 months in federal lockup is appropriate. Federal judges don’t have to follow plea deals, however, and the maximum sentence for him could be up to 10 years behind bars.
In his bid for probation, Weiner’s lawyers said his behavior came from an untreated addiction that caused him to compulsively respond to internet messages.
