England coach Gareth Southgate is still adamant that Joe Hart is the best keeper in the country, but Hughes and some sections of the media have disagreed.
Butland, Fraser Forster, Tom Heaton and Ben Foster are all pushing for the No.1 spot and Hughes insists there is no doubting his stopper’s ability.
Hart was selected in the squad for England’s last two World Cup qualifiers but Hughes insists Butland is good enough to start for his country after another fine start to the Premier League campaign for Stoke.
He told reporters: “I understand maybe to a certain extent that Gareth would want to be loyal but sometimes you have to deal with the here and now rather than think about what’s gone on in the past.
“If you’re in the business of winning games you have to go with the guy that’s in form.
“So I’m probably being a little bit simplistic saying that but purely on form then Jack had a really good case in my view.”
