Gareth Southgate is delighted with how his young defenders have stepped up against the world’s best, but admits his side need more on the front foot after their 0-0 draw with Brazil.
England were resolute at the back, with Liverpool’s Joe Gomez a standout performer alongside John Stones and Harry Maguire, though – as was the case with Germany – Brazil certainly had another gear in them.
When Southgate’s side did get a chance on the ball they were far to hurried to go long and find either Marcus Rashford or Jamie Vardy on the break. With both Miranda and Marquinhos in fine form at the back, England’s front two were bullied out of the game for long periods.
Facing the top two in the world back-to-back and not conceding is something Southgate can, and will, point to. However, there were spells in both games where he will feel that his side could, and should, have gone on and taken something.
For now, though, Southgate is delighted with how his young players have stepped up.
