Rangers news: Halliday reveals when he knew he made a mistake on loan

Rangers midfielder Andy Halliday has revealed the moment he knew he’d made a mistake moving to Azerbaijan on a season-long loan.

Halliday was bombed out of Ibrox by former manager Pedro Caixinha and surprised everyone by agreeing to join Gabala but found little success in the former Soviet state.

Rangers ended the 26-year-old’s loan early and brought him back to Ibrox when the transfer window opened on January 1 and the midfielder made his first appearance in Friday morning’s 1-0 win over Atletico Mineiro.

Halliday admitted he had a bit of a blunder when he didn’t research what he was letting himself in for in Azerbaijan and found himself falling foul of the rules which limited his appearances.

“I found out five days into the loan that there was a foreigner rule. We had 12, including myself but we could only play five,” Halliday said, as quoted by The Scotsman.

“That was something I never knew about before I went.

“So before our second leg against Panathinaikos, the foreign lads were pretty much pulled into a room and told, ‘win this game or you won’t play’.

“I just didn’t know what the set-up was like. They didn’t have a training ground so you had to eat for yourself and I’m not a great cook! But listen, I’m not making excuses. It was my mistake, I should have done more research to know all that before I went.”
