Jose Mourinho remained coy when quizzed directly about the speculation linking Manchester United with a January transfer swoop to sign Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal.
The Red Devils have emerged as possible contenders for Sanchez’s signature this month as the speculation about his future at Arsenal continues.
Manchester City have long been linked with a move to sign Sanchez this month but it seems that the Red Devils could also be potentially interested in luring him to Old Trafford.
The 29-year-old is in the final few months of his contract at The Emirates and the Gunners risk losing him for free in the summer unless they opt to cash in this month.
Mourinho was asked directly about the speculation linking Manchester United with a bid to sign Sanchez this month on Friday and he refused to rule out a move for the attacker.
Speaking at his news conference at Carrington on Friday, Mourinho said: “At the general level, I can say I told you myself, the Manchester United owners don’t believe in the January market.
“We don’t believe in signing a player just to do something. What we believe is some players in football world, if you have a chance to sign them – it doesn’t matter if it is in January, March or July – you have to try.
“But in relation to Alexis Sanchez, I don’t say a word. The only word I can say is the same that everybody says – he’s a phenomenal player.
