A subway train smashed into a straphanger Thursday, killing him at a busy Upper East Side station during the evening commute, authorities said.

The downtown No. 6 train struck the man at about 6:32 p.m. at the Lexington Ave. and E. 77th St. station.

While it is not clear how the man ended up beneath the train, police said he does not appear to be the victim of a crime, police said.

The train’s motorman found the body when he got out to inspect what appeared to be brake failure, authorities said.

He allegedly spotted the corpse on the track bed further down the tunnel.

The body may have triggered a trip mechanism that applies the train’s emergency brake, police said.
