Manchester City forward Gabriel Jesus could return to action within two to three weeks, according to Pep Guardiola.

The 20-year-old, who has eight Premier League goals this season, was left in tears after suffering a medial ligament injury in the goalless draw with Crystal Palace on New Year’s Eve, as Man City’s 18-match winning league run came to an end.

Guardiola confirmed the Brazil international visited Dr Ramon Cugat in Barcelona on Thursday to be assessed and suggested Jesus could make a remarkable return in time for the club’s Champions League last-16 tie against Basel on February 13.

He told reporters at his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s game against Liverpool: ‘Yesterday he was in Barcelona with Dr Cugat and at the end the news is quite good. I think two or three weeks, against Basel in the Champions League, he could be ready.’

Unbeaten City have a commanding 15-point lead at the top of the Premier League table, having only dropped four points throughout the season so far.
