Gary Neville defends Man United's spending in light of Alexis Sanchez link

Gary Neville has rubbished the suggestion Manchester United are willing to splurge more transfer funds on Manchester City on new signings.

The Red Devils fuelled transfer speculation surrounding Alexis Sanchez on Thursday after reports claimed Manchester United have entered the race to sign the Chile international in the January transfer window.

South American forward Sanchez has been linked with a move to Premier League leaders Manchester City over the past 12 months and came close to a switch to the Citizens in the summer transfer window.

However, a proposed move fell through on deadline day when Arsenal were unable to sign AS Monaco playmaker Thomas Lemar despite the Gunners agreeing a £92m transfer deal with the Ligue 1 champions.

Manchester United have now entered the race to sign Sanchez and according to reports on Friday, the Red Devils are willing to eclipse Manchester City’s financial terms in a desperate bid to land the Arsenal number seven.

When a Manchester Evening News reporter suggested Manchester United were simply throwing money at a player once again under chief executive Ed Woodward, Neville felt compelled to point out Manchester City’s lavish spending.

Neville wrote on Twitter: “We are trying to re-write recent history here. City paid 130m for 3 full backs! United wouldn’t pay for perisic!! Let’s calm down … city have spent the most money in last 18 months! City are a wonderful team…
