Corey Neilson says Nottingham Panthers’ shock Champions League win against SC Bern was not just a big night for the club – but for the entire Elite League.
They won the hard way too, conceding twice in the opening period to trail 2-0, Simon Moser and Andrew Ebbett scoring for Bern.
Mokshantsev struck twice in the second period to level the tie before Brown and Lachowicz lifted the roof off the arena with goals in the third period.
The win puts the Panthers two points clear of Bern at the top of the group after four matches – and the Elite League firmly on the map, according to Neilson.
“Wow, I’m shocked,” said the Panthers head coach.
“I love this hockey team. They work so hard, they give everything they have, they play with a lot of speed.
“What we did tonight is pretty special, not just for the Nottingham Panthers, but also the Elite League.
“We’ve shown that we can skate first off, with a team of this quality.
“I think we limited them to six shots in the first period.
“Any time they got into our scoring area they are so good, but we did an excellent job protecting our nets and when we got our opportunities we capitalised.”
Neilson felt the Panthers’ physicality was key to their famous victory.
