The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are feeling pretty relieved today. It has been a tough 2018 so far for the Blues, but a win against West Brom on Monday night has certainly left our resident Blues feeling more relaxed.
Indeed, for the time being at least, Antonio Conte’s job looks safe, though it’s fair to say that could all change over the next week. The Blues are set to take on Hull City in the FA Cup and Barcelona in the Champions League over the next 7 days, and it wouldn’t be an over-exaggeration to suggest that Conte’s employment is riding on those two results.
Two losses and he could be out the door, whilst a couple of wins could see confidence restored in the Italian.
However, if the worst should happen, it doesn’t appear as though Chelsea are going to have their pick of immediate replacements for Conte, at least according to the Sun. The Sun is reporting that Luis Enrique is unlikely to take up the post at Chelsea until the end of the season – if approached – because he wants to bring in his trusted team of assistants, many of whom won’t be available until the summer.
The Spaniard is touted as a key target of Roman Abramovich, should Conte get the sack, but it appears as though the Russian may not get his wish for quite a while yet.
It will no doubt come as a blow to Chelsea’s proposed succession plan – with an interim manager likely to be needed in the meantime.
Enrique is clearly a top manager, and he’s a manager…
