Liverpool’s long time target, Virgil van Dijk, is reportedly going to hand down a transfer request to Southampton over his wish to join Liverpool at any cost.
Metro has reported that the Dutchman is adamant to play for Liverpool despite interests from other Premier League clubs like Chelsea and Manchester City.
Southampton are demanding at least £60 million for the 26 year old, and if the demand is met, he would become the costliest defender in the world. Though, the only way left for Van Dijk to join Liverpool is by request after the debacle that happened last month.
Earlier, Southampton had reported Liverpool to Premier League over illegally contacting their player which led to Liverpool formally apologizing to Southampton and ending the interest on van Dijk. So Liverpool cannot make any further contact until the player himself wants to leave.
Virgil van Dijk joined the English club in 2015 from Scottish side, Celtic. He has been capped 55 times and is currently the captain of the team. His defensive style of play is of the no-nonsense type.
The Dutchman is even good at set pieces and direct free kicks. Experts all around the world are saying he is worth the price Southampton are demanding.
Liverpool – Southampton relationship in the transfer window is one on which a book can be written. Liverpool have already signed 5 players from Southampton in the last 3 seasons, who are, Lambert, Lallana, Lovren, Clyne and Mane. It comes with attached criticism too.
Van Dijk remained injured in the latter part of the last season. Southampton have to be cautious and should sell him at the right time for the right amount.
If they wait till the next season, they might lose on a large amount of money, and it is certain that he would leave at some point. So it is better to get the deal done as soon as possible.
Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan also believes that Southampton should extract as much as possible out of this deal. Jordan said on talkSPORT.
They can pay for it, write a chequeout,
You’ve got big mouths and you want to go about things a certain way and I’m completely sure that if had it done to them they would be screaming from the rafters.
I think they way Southampton will consequence this is by consequencing Liverpool’s chequebook.
You look at the centre-back department and you look at boys like (Michael) Keane going for £25-30million and you look at the boy at Middlesbrough, (Ben) Gibson, who may well go for £25-30million.
If Steve Gibson wants his way then he will go for £25-30million.
You look at Virgil van Dijk and he is a top player and I don’t see any reason why Southampton should compromise and I’m sure they won’t.
They will have their pound of flesh and hopefully Liverpool will pay behaving in a certain way.
Express, on the other hand have reported that Arsene Wenger is also interested in the center back and can get the deal done in £45 million itself. This seems too inexplicable.
